2020 Grad & Co-Ops hit the quarter mark!

As a strong believer and enforcer of industry-based learning programs, ANL offers an exciting and diverse range of career opportunities for students and graduates through the 12-month Co-Operative Education (Co-Op) Program and Graduate Programs.

The 2020 cohort welcomed 4 co-ops and 7 graduates who hit the quarter mark in April. Having achieved the first milestone during their time with the Group, the experience alone has contributed significantly to their progression, development and overall confidence. We hope that their initial year will mark the beginning of a fascinating career within the Group for these enthusiastic new employees.

The 2020 cohort have come from quite diverse backgrounds and we’d love to highlight a few of our new talent:

Shane John: Purchasing Officer (Graduate)

I was introduced to the shipping industry in my home country Sri Lanka, where I worked for two years in Customer Service for CMA CGM before moving to Australia in 2018. In 2018, I completed a Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University of Technology, majoring in Logistics & Supply Chain Management. My first contact with ANL was through one of my units at university and from then on, it was one of my goals to get into ANL once I graduated.

Graduating from university and moving into the corporate world is an exciting time. For me, this involved a lot of changes as it was the first time working in a corporate setting in a different country.

In the back of my mind, having come from Sri Lanka I was a little worried about adjusting to the Australian workplace setting. However, after a few months of working at ANL, it feels like ‘home away from home’.

Having an open mind and embracing the multicultural atmosphere here at ANL has helped me settle in extremely well. The people and culture of the organization makes each day an enjoyable one! I am thankful to the team around me who have and continue to equip me with the knowledge required to carry out my role. The opportunity to be a part of this program has provided me a great opportunity to make meaningful strides here at ANL.

Will Spark: Regional Logistics Assistant (Co-Op)

The past three months have far exceeded my expectations, we are so lucky to have a cohort of peers and a great team of senior staff which made the transition to work life even better. I can honestly say there hasn’t been a single night where I haven’t been excited for the next day’s work. I would credit this to the integral tasks placed upon me that I get satisfaction from completing; a busy day is a good day.

I’ve found the culture at ANL to be commendable. Everyone gets along well, presents and conducts themselves in a professional manner, grinds out hard work but then can enjoy each other’s company at the weeks end downstairs. In future, I’d like to spend some brief time in other departments to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the business.

Layanvi Rajakaruna: Trade Analyst (Graduate)

It’s been an exciting three months since I joined the Marketing department at ANL as the Trade Analyst graduate. As someone that completely changed industries and moved from the service industry to the shipping industry, the last three months have been a steep learning curve.

Over time, I am gradually gaining knowledge of the shipping industry, the company as well as the operations of my team. The corporate world operates quite differently to what I am used to which has taken some time to adjust, however my team has been great in helping me settle into the new environment. The various social events have certainly helped!

Being a part of the shipping industry, it is interesting to see how the work we do supports the economy. Amidst the changes brought upon by the current situation in the world, I have adapted well to the environment and am able to carry out my responsibilities through working remotely. It is a new experience for all, however everyone at ANL has been immensely helpful with the transition.
