ANL’s collection of artistic containers, originally created to promote ‘Life Below Water’, were recently re-launched into the company’s global fleet.
This time they’re carrying grain for one of ANL’s clients - CHS Broadbent, an Australian grain supply chain company that serves a large global market. The artistic containers were packed at CHS Broadbent’s packing plant in Ballarat in regional Victoria

From a business point of view, we sat down with CEO of ANL Shane Walden to discuss the importance of cultural diversity in the workplace.

APL England, a Singapore-flagged vessel, lost 50 containers in heavy seas off the New South Wales coast whilst facing adverse weather conditions on 24 May 2020.

ANL CEO Xavier Eiglier says “there is no doubt about the number of missing containers, as the vessel is now empty, with all remaining containers safely discharged from the vessel on Wednesday 17th June. As from the very beginning, we continue to work hard, and as quickly as possible, to clean up any debris upcoming ashore.

Safety is key
On the night of the incident, the containers fell overboard at least 40 nautical miles away from the NSW shoreline and most likely sunk to a depth of 3,000m. At this depth they are unlikely to pose any danger to marine vessels in that location. But as Mr. Eiglier says, “Safety is still a priority and ANL will work with the owner of the vessel to minimize the possibility of any risk to mariners, fishermen or local communities. We are constantly monitoring the situation”.

ANL is fully cooperating with the Authorities in full transparency in their investigations. “It is essential for ANL to work closely with the Authorities” said ANL CEO Xavier Eiglier.
Work is currently underway to ensure safe discharge of the 79 damaged containers still on board the ship. “We are working as efficiently as possible to safely discharge the damaged containers with the Qube Ports team at the AAT Terminal in Brisbane. The task is not easy and we are impressed by the expertise of the Qube, Fire Services as well as Port of Brisbane personnel working with us. We thank them for their excellent efforts over the last week” said ANL CEO Xavier Eiglier.

ANL immediately appointed the Varley Group as well as Avcon Projects, both of whom have expertise in environmental clean-ups, to remove debris and containers that reach the coast. The clean-up efforts to date have been conducted in full cooperation with NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and local councils and we thank them for their swift and efficient response to the incident.

Through the height of this storm, the crew of this vessel leveraged their training and navigational skills to maneuver the container ship into safety. This was an unnerving event, even for seasoned maritime professionals, and the captain and the crew have ANL’s full support.

ANL, operator of container vessel APL England which lost containers in heavy seas off the New South Wales coast on 24 May 2020, confirms that the vessel is berthed safely at the Port of Brisbane. We are working with the authorities in their investigations and will take their findings very seriously.
  At this point, it has been identified that 50 containers fell from the vessel during the storm on 24 May.  The contents of these containers include a range of consumer goods, some of which have washed up on the New South Wales coast.
